History
In the early 1980’s, a building company with the expertise and experience to undertake large underground contract works didn’t exist in the Portuguese market.
The few works realised up until then were carried out with foreign technology and know-how.

It was in this context that, in 1981, the then called “ Empresa de Sondagens e Fundações Teixeira Duarte, Lda.” established a partnership with the Spanish company “Obras Subterráneas, S.A.”, envisaging the sinking of the extraction shaft of Neves-Corvo mine.
From this combination would result, in June 1986, the creation of "EPOS - EMPRESA PORTUGUESA DE OBRAS SUBTERRÂNEAS, LDA " , consolidating under the form of regular society the connection that existed, such as joint venture, between its founding partners.

The corporate structure of EPOS remained unchanged until 2008, with “Teixeira Duarte – Engenharia e Construções, S.A.” and “Obras Subterráneas, S.A.”, as the sole share capital holders. In that year the Spanish partner withdrew and the company was converted into an Incorporated Company, 100% incorporated into the Teixeira Duarte Group.

From these two companies, EPOS inherited, right from the beginning, a cultural and knowledge legacy that allowed it to affirm itself autonomously as a specialised contractor in its field.

For over 20 years EPOS has implemented its works from north to south of Portugal, Madeira and Spain. Relying on an excellent and qualified team of professionals, in alliance to the most advanced technical means and unparalleled experience in its field make EPOS the market reference.

Among its main achievements stands out the continuous presence – of almost 3 decades – in mining development contracts, having excavated hundreds of kilometres of tunnels, apart from other relevant mining works, with special mention of the construction of a 630 metres deep shaft.

Its portfolio also includes the construction of the most important road and railway tunnels built in Portugal. EPOS is also present in the field of hydraulic underground works, through multiple interventions performed for hydraulic and hydroelectric projects.

The month of May 2004 marked the beginning of the internationalization of EPOS, having been awarded the Mina de Aguablanca contract, situated in the province of Badajoz, Spain. This contract was followed by 3 other projects for hydroelectric power stations in Galicia.

The diversity of projects carried out since its foundation led to the development of complimentary business areas capable of supplying the internal production needs of the company as well as other market requests.
